GoMate is the latest humanoid robot by China’s GAC Group

A series of news have been poring in on social media portals recently about companies from China, introducing their humanoid robots to the world. China is one of the leading countries in the mass production of robots and one of the companies recently mass produced 1000 robots in the year 2024.

A series of news have been poring in on social media portals recently about companies from China, introducing their humanoid robots to the world. China can be considered one of the countries where companies have started mass production of their robots. In this article, we are going to introduce GoMate – the latest robot unveiled on 26th December, 2024.

Robot Name: GoMate

Company / Institute: GAC Group

Location: Guangzhou, China

Inception: 2024

Sensors: Vision sensors, Inertial Measurement Units, Force & Torque sensors

Skills: Bipedal and Quadrupedal locomotion, autonomous navigation, adaptive decision making, real-time motion control

Industry: Security, Healthcare, Automotive aftermarket, logistics, education

Programming Languages: Python and C++ and Proprietary Algorithms

Commercial availability: No, it is expected to be in commercial production by 2026.

GoMate is the third generation humanoid robot launched by GAC Group of China. The company unveiled it at the recently held China Robotics Network Annual Conference. While GAC group is an automaker, it has shown a great achievement by developing GoMate and introducing it.

The unique feature of GoMate is that it has the ability to switch between two wheeled mode and four wheeled mode as per the requirement. The 4 wheeled mode will enable it to navigate stairs, climb slopes or overcome other obstacles easily while two wheeled mode will enable it to work efficiently in places where space is limited.

It’s looks are a little different compared to other humanoid robots. While some humanoid robots try to mimic human face, some have a ring type structure instead of human like face, GoMate does not seem to have a face. It’s head is like a plate with lights. The hands are divided into three parts, first one connected with shoulder, second connecting the upper hand with lower hand and then the third one is the wrist, palm & fingers part that is connected with the lower hand. Also, it’s legs are not made of many joints. Visibly there are just two joints – the first one joining the upper torso and then the second portion or joint is the part with 4 wheels.

Coming to the power backup, GoMate is powered by GAC’s in-house all-solid-state batteries which can keep it going for 6 hours on a single charge. Its vision-based autonomous driving algorithm allows it to navigate complex environments and perform tasks efficiently, making it a versatile addition to various industrial applications.

It uses the company’s pure-vision autonomous driving algorithm1 , which enables it to navigate autonomously. The FIGS-SLAM2 algorithm architecture allows the robot to understand and navigate both flat surfaces and complex 3D spaces. It’s cloud based AI models allows it to respond to complex voice commands in milliseconds. While GoMate is designed to perform many tasks autonomously, it also has remote-control capability that adds flexibility, making it suitable for scenarios where human oversight or manual operation is necessary.

As per the information available on public portals, the company has shown intention to start mass production of it’s components in 2025 and begin the robot’s production by 2026.

Technology:

GoMate integrates advanced sensors, AI-driven decision-making, and precise motion control technologies. The robot’s ability to optimize energy consumption while maintaining high performance sets it apart in the robotics industry.

Programming Languages:

GoMate might be relying on a combination of Python for rapid prototyping, C++ for performance-critical modules, and proprietary AI algorithms for vision-based navigation and adaptive behavior. We were unable to validate this information though.

Current use:

GoMate is currently undergoing experimental deployment in GAC’s automotive production lines for inspection and repetitive tasks.

Specifications :

  • Height: 1.75 meters (Bipedal mode) | 1.4 meters (Quadrupedal mode)
  • Degree of Freedom : 38
  • Battery Life: 6 hours
  • Energy efficiency: Claimed to have 80% improvement over similar robots

  1. The pure-vision autonomous driving algorithm is a technology used in robotics and self-driving systems that relies solely on cameras and vision-based sensors, rather than combining these with technologies like radar or LiDAR. This approach emphasizes processing visual data from high-resolution cameras to understand the environment, navigate, and make decisions in real time. ↩︎
  2. The FIGS-SLAM algorithm refers to a type of Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) technique, which is a fundamental technology in robotics and autonomous systems. The name FIGS is derived from its key components: Fusion of Inertial, GPS, and Stereo data for SLAM. While specific details might vary, the algorithm is designed to combine data from multiple sources to achieve accurate and robust navigation and mapping. ↩︎
